每年正月二十 新山年度最盛大宗教活動
供奉元天上帝、洪仙大帝、感天大帝、華光大帝和趙大元帥五尊神明的柔佛古廟，分別由新山的潮州人、福建人、客家人、廣肇人和海南人供奉。每年正月二十日，這五尊神明都要出巡游街，接受大批信徒頂禮膜拜。原本隻是以民間信仰為主的廟會活動，如今已演變為華社各界傾力支持的新山年度最盛大活動，更吸引了許多新加坡人前去參加。(Sg2JB)
1855年實行港主制度，1870年建古廟計劃
新山1855年開埠后實行“港主制度”。當時陳厝港（Kangkar Tebrau，位於新山北部）的港主陳開順從新加坡招徠大量潮州同鄉前去種植甘蔗，也把源自新加坡的“義興公司”帶進柔佛。1870年前后，“義興公司”首領陳旭年發起建立柔佛古廟，建成后成為新山五幫華人的核心活動場所。(Sg2JB)
曾因二战停办，70年代起积极筹办
這個歷史性的游神慶典，據說百年來就隻有一年因第二次世界大戰，日本佔領我國時停辦過一次，其余時間是從未間斷的。當時新山華社的動員能力不強，游神經費由各幫自行籌措。許多游神組織都是臨時性的。當時的華社領導精英對游神的熱忱度也不高。直到上世紀70年代以后，在戰后成立的新山中華公會領導層，才開始較積極地協助籌辦神游。(Sg2JB)
80年代同心一致守護華族文化 ，免除遭征地厄運
80年代中期，柔佛州政府曾想征用古廟部分地段，是新山華人開始同心一致維護華族文化遺產的一個轉折點。經過華社的多番努力，社會才轉變對游神的態度。(Sg2JB)
于2012年，被列為國家文化遺產
如今，新山每年農歷正月廿至廿二日的游神慶典已經成為新山一個特殊的傳統節日。百年來仍然興盛，首相納吉更於2012年2月12日正式把柔佛古廟游神列為國家文化遺產。(Sg2JB)
2016年，柔佛州蘇丹首次蒞臨游神現場
雖然說，柔佛古廟游神慶典乃是華人的宗教活動，但在2016年2月28日，柔佛州蘇丹，依布拉欣殿下首次以蘇丹身份蒞臨游神慶典現場。這也是144年來首次有柔州蘇丹出席的游神盛事，締造歷史性的一刻。(Sg2JB)
