Proximity Card

Proximity card or access badges are plastic PVC cards that allow a cardholder to gain entry into a building or a specific area within the confines of a building.

Proximity cards provide access to enter certain points such as doors, parking gates, or other areas monitored by the card which underscores the true value of their security.

The manner in which proximity cards work is this:  access cards contain a pre-defined number that is read by a proximity card reader programmed to “read” these numbers.  The card’s number is transmitted to a computer system that makes the decision whether or not to grant access to the building or not, depending on their defined security or access level.

How does Proximity Card works?

A proximity card is a contactless card which can be read without insertion into a card reading device. Because they don’t require a swipe, they can be left in a wallet or purse and still serve their purpose. Prox cards use a low 125 kHz radio frequency to transmit to a door access reader. When the card is placed on the reader, the card’s unique strand of numbers is passed to the access control panel, which verifies if the number matches an approved number in the internal database. If the card number is approved, the door will be unlocked.

If the card information is programmed into the access control list within the computer, it allows the system to unlock the access point so that the person may enter.  The information is kept in the system so that if the company wants to create reports or audits, they can easily perform this in an automated fashion. Such reports also allow purview for who entered the access point and what time specifically they did so.

Proximity cards are a cost-effective way to control who has access to your building. While locks and keys also allow you to secure your building, the inconvenience and expense of changing locks and re-issuing keys in the event that they are misplaced, forgotten, or lost not only becomes expensive but also time-consuming.

In addition, standard keys can easily be copied or duplicated which creates an even greater security risk to the facility and to the employees within it.

Types Of Basic Proximity Cards

Standard Prox Cards

  • A standard prox card is made from white PVC
  • Same size as a CR80 ID card.
  • PVC is the most common card material.

Clamshell Prox Cards

  • Clamshell proximity cards are thicker than normal 30mil cards.
  • Due to this thicker size you cannot print on clamshell cards using an ID card printer.

Magnetic Stripe Prox Cards

  • Encode additional data on the card using a HiCo magnetic stripe along with the access control functionality.

Composite Prox Cards

  • Combination of PVC and polyester
  • Able to withstand lamination and reverse transfer printing than a standard PVC card

What is HID Card?

HID cards are simply proximity cards branded by the HID global corporation, a worldwide leader in proximity cards and access control. Like other proximity and RFID cards, an HID card is simply an ID card which enables proximity technology in its everyday functions. HID cards, as well as other types of RFID cards and smart cards, are popular for access control, as well as other functions like public transportation and employee ID.

Using HID access cards, an HID access control system gives your organization more control over who has access to your building. HID door access utilizes four main elements to operate smoothly.

HID is one of the leading manufacturers of proximity cards and are one of the standards of prox access control systems. They are simple to use and are compatible with all HID cards readers. PVC HID cards are easy to print on and create designs. HID cards are commonly used for access control in office buildings, campuses, schools, and universities.
